How to Choose the Right Driving School for Your Teen in Silver Spring, MD
By Circle Driving School — Silver Spring, MD
Choosing a driving school is one of the most consequential decisions a parent makes for their teen. The instructor your student spends hours with in a car has a real impact on their safety habits for life. Here's how to evaluate your options in Silver Spring and Montgomery County.
Start with MVA certification
In Maryland, driving schools must be licensed by the MVA to provide certified driver education. Without this certification, the school's courses do not satisfy the state requirement — meaning your teen cannot use that training to progress toward their license.
Always verify a school is MVA-certified before enrolling. Circle Driving School is fully MVA-certified and has been since we opened in 2016.
Questions to ask every school
1. Who actually teaches the behind-the-wheel lessons? Some schools advertise a well-known instructor but use freelancers or minimally-trained staff for behind-the-wheel time. Ask specifically who will be in the car with your teen and what their qualifications are.
At Circle, Mr. Mekonnen personally teaches or directly supervises all instruction. Our second instructor, Gary, handles BTW lessons and road test preparation. You know exactly who your teen will be with.
2. How many students are in each class? Large class sizes reduce the quality of classroom instruction. Our classes are kept small to allow real interaction and questions.
3. What is the school's road test pass rate? A school that has genuinely prepared hundreds of students should have data on this. Ask directly. Vague answers ("most of our students pass") are a red flag.
4. Do you provide a car for the road test? The White Oak MVA road test requires a safe, insured vehicle. Many schools offer the classroom portion but leave families to figure out the test vehicle on their own. Circle Driving School provides the car and instructor for your White Oak MVA road test — that's what our Road Test Preparation packages are for.
5. Are prices shown upfront? A school that hides pricing or says "contact us for a quote" is wasting your time. Prices should be published clearly. At Circle, every service has a visible price — no surprises.
Red flags to watch for
- No physical address — online-only schools with no Maryland location may not be MVA-certified
- Prices that seem too low — cutting corners somewhere (unqualified instructors, poor vehicles)
- No reviews or fake-looking reviews — look for detailed, specific Google reviews with responses from the school
- High-pressure enrollment tactics — "this price only available today" language
- Unclear instructor qualifications — who is actually teaching your teen?
What parents tell us
The most common reason parents choose Circle Driving School is the combination of personal instruction from Mr. Mekonnen and the White Oak MVA road test package. They want a single school that handles everything from first class to road test — not one school for classroom and another to figure out the rest.
We've been serving Silver Spring and Montgomery County families since 2016. Over 1,000 students have completed their licensing journey with us.
Evaluating your options
There are several driving schools operating in the Silver Spring area. When you evaluate them, use the questions above. Verify MVA certification, ask about instructor qualifications, confirm road test support, and read Google reviews carefully.
