Before the test

You need:

• A valid Maryland learner's permit
• Completed driver education certificate (your school submits this electronically)
• Completed skills practice log (signed by your supervising driver)
• A safe, insured vehicle — or use ours

You must schedule your road test through myMVA at mva.maryland.gov. Walk-ins are not accepted.

What the test covers

The White Oak road test starts in an off-road area where you'll perform basic maneuvers before heading onto public roads. The examiner evaluates:

• Vehicle control — smooth acceleration, braking, steering
• Turns — proper signaling, lane position, speed
• Lane changes — checking mirrors and blind spots
• Intersections — right-of-way, stopping completely at stop signs
• Parking maneuvers — parallel parking or reverse two-point turn
• Speed management — staying at or below posted limits
• Following distance — maintaining safe space from the car ahead

Common reasons people fail

• Not coming to a complete stop at stop signs (rolling stops fail)
• Forgetting to check blind spots before lane changes
• Speeding even slightly above the posted limit
• Improper lane position during turns
• Not yielding correctly at uncontrolled intersections
